How To Use Video In Figma

If you are a UI/UX designer, product owner, or digital marketer, chances are you are familiar with Figma. Figma is a web-based design tool that allows you to create interfaces and prototype websites and apps directly in your browser. Even though Figma is renowned for its robust design and prototyping features, its capability to incorporate videos is often overshadowed. This blog post will guide you through the process of incorporating videos in Figma.

Embedding a Video in Figma

Unlike other design tools, Figma does not natively support video embeds. However, with a bit of creativity, you can simulate this feature. Here is how:

1. Take a Screenshot of the Video

Firstly, play your video in any video player and take a screenshot of the scene you want to display in Figma. The screenshot will act as a placeholder for your video in your Figma design.

2. Import the Screenshot into Figma

Once you have your screenshot, go to Figma, create a new frame, and import your screenshot. You can do this by clicking on the File > Import option in the top menu.

Now, it’s time to link your screenshot to the actual video. To do this, you can use the Prototyping > link feature in Figma. Here’s how:

1. Select the frame containing your screenshot.
2. Go to the Prototyping tab in the right panel.
3. In the Interactions section, click the + button to add a new interaction.
4. In the Trigger dropdown, select the Click option.
5. In the Action dropdown, select the Open URL option.
6. In the URL input field that appears, paste the link to your video.

And that’s it! Now, when you click on the screenshot in the Figma preview mode, it will open the linked video in a new tab.

While it’s not possible to embed videos directly into Figma, the workaround described above provides an elegant solution to this limitation. By adding a degree of interactivity to your designs, you can create more engaging and realistic prototypes. So, go ahead and start incorporating videos into your Figma designs today!
