The Eraser Tool

  3. Click and drag to make a cut in the object. The sliced part becomes a separate object that you can select and delete.

The Shape Modes

If you want to erase a specific shape from another shape, the Shape Modes provide a useful tool. For example, you can erase a circle from a rectangle to create a hole. Here’s how:

  1. First draw the shape you want to keep, then draw the shape you want to erase.
  2. Select both shapes using the Selection tool.
  3. In the Pathfinder panel, click Minus Front. The top shape is erased from the bottom shape, and you’re left with a single shape.
