Show File Extension in Windows XP

Posted in Basic Tutorials, Windows Tutorials by John Ward on the May 22nd, 2007

Users migrating to XP from previous versions of windows may be surprised to see that the file extensions are not shown. Even if you aren’t accustomed to it, it is good practice to show the extension of known files. This tutorial will guide you through the simple steps to show the three letter file extensions.

Open up any folder in windows (I will use My Computer)
Show File Extension in Windows XP

On the menu select Tools > Folder Options.
Show File Extension in Windows XP

The Folder Options Window will be displayed.
Show File Extension in Windows XP

Click the View tab at the top of the window. Scroll down to the option for “Hide extensions for known file types.
Show File Extension in Windows XP

Uncheck the option and then click ok to exit.
Show File Extension in Windows XP

Your files should now display the three letter extensions.

[...] Enter to bring up the help system and see all the available commands. To load a file use the :load command and specify the path to the Haskell file. To test this create a new text file and name it hh01.hs, save it on the c: drive (or whatever drive unit of yours). If you are on Windows Vista you may need to go through several dialogs in order to allow the writing on the c: bare bones unit so instead, save the file on your user folder, in my case c:Usersjorgedbucaran, make sure to change the .txt extension to .hs. If you can’t see the file extension go here or here. [...]

I never knew how valuable this was until I didn’t have it. For my birthday I received a mini computer that had Windows XP. My desktop has Vista and I was accustomed to seeing the extension which is not there on Windows XP, until now.
