Back to cPanel 10

Posted in Site News and Updates by John Ward on the July 30th, 2007

Apparently my host (SurpassHosting) has been having some issues with the recent upgrade to cPanel 11. I was happy that they finally upgraded, but they have decide to roll back to cPanel 10. Here is the response I got from Surpass when asking about the change:

Hello,

CPanel 11 has been causing problems for some of our users so we have opted to use 10 for a while longer on some servers.

Regards,
Andrew

I don’t think I will be missing much. They only changes seem to be a sleek interface, and I can live without that for a while.

Most people do notice the new interface as it is the most obvious improvement seen in cPanel 11. There are many back-end improvements for server administrators.

For end-users, cPanel 11 allows you to use web disk (essentially mount your web space as if it was a thumb drive to your computer), install your own PHP PECLs and PEAR Packages, install your own Perl modules and now cPanel supports Ruby on Rails. Additionally there’s a sleek new file manager and the cPanel interface is now friendlier for non-English speaking customers.

I was happy when they upgraded to cPanel 11. It seemed like it was overdue. The first thing I noticed was the visual change. The look was very nice. I didn’t even get a chance to dig into cPanel any deeper, they switched back to version 10 too soon. Hopefully my host will get their stuff together and upgrade to 11 (again).

Web disk sounds very interesting. It seems like it would save me a lot of FTP work.

Our host has upgraded us to the new version again. Once I get around to checking out all of the new features I may do a little review on it. You can also look forward to some cPanel 11 tutorials.
